Humanitarian Work

Jonathan Banks is able to volunteer and offer discounted charitable sector rates for nonprofit organisations by balancing his photography with commercial work. I am always on the lookout for new creative partnerships.

Capturing human stories across the UK and the world.

Charitable organisations must recognise that they need to communicate their purpose and empower the viewer with the belief that their impact will make a difference.

Banks has worked as a photojournalist and a humanitarian photographer. In fact, he is an extremely diverse photographer, working in a variety of corporate genres as well as humanitarian and editorial photography. Instead of diluting his focus, he believes that it’s a strength for the organisations that he works with and for his position in the professional world of photography.

Whilst Humanitarian photography is inherently different to photojournalism due to the boundaries of their individual institutions, he believes that the photographer’s intent is ultimately the same.

Humanitarian photography strives to raise awareness for the issues that an NGO is trying to resolve, showcasing the work that they are doing, which often has the dual purpose of supporting advocacy for policy change and generating revenue for them.

It is important to note that humanitarian photographers represent the interest of the organisations that they are working with. This means understanding the organisations objectives and being sensitive to the people that you photograph. Knowing when not to photograph and observing is often more important than photographing. He values long-term relationships with the organisations that he works with.

UK

As a UK based photographer, Banks has volunteered, served, and worked with a great many UK charities.

The pursuit of creating impactful imagery for the purpose of raising awareness comes from always wanting to make a difference with his photography, concerning complex humanitarian and social issues.

Banks strives to capture photographs that celebrate the value of human life, with storytelling which allows every individual the right to be whoever they are, wherever they live with dignity and beauty.

International

Jonathan Banks is a globally recognised humanitarian photographer who has worked in over seventy different countries across five different continents, documenting subjects as diverse as mask dancing festivals in Burkina Faso, the effects of the Chernobyl disaster in the Ukraine and the aftermath of 9/11 in New York. His international experience includes working in security impaired areas, where his communication skills and sensitivity allow him to capture subjects in the most challenging situations. He has produced work in support of the Red Cross, International Alert and TASSC International, that has gone on to be recognised in a number of awards and exhibited in various venues.

Regardless of the location, subject material or culture, Banks always respects the idea that we are all equal and approaches every person with a compassion to empower them in his photographs. He is looking for an individual beauty and optimism that will inspire action and an acknowledgement for the beauty of humanity, in all those that see his work.

Featured Campaigns

Portraits of Resilience

Portraits of Resilience features photographs by Jonathan Banks that share the stories of survivors of torture from around the world. The work was exhibited in collaboration with Torture Abolition and Survivors Support Coalition (TASSC) at the Phillips Collection (Phillips@THEARC) in April 2022.

Survivors are the strongest and most effective voice in the campaign to abolish torture.

“Engaging the public through art is the focus of The Phillips Collection’s work at THEARC,” notes Director of Community Engagement Nehemiah Dixon III. “We hope that this exhibition leads to deeper conversations about the refugee crisis, and the role that race, national origin, and class play in impacting who we extend empathy and humanity to and how.”

Tubeho Neza (“Live Well”) Programme in Rwanda

Jonathan Banks worked with DelAgua at the beginning of their carbon credit project called Tubeho Neza (“Live Well”), travelling in Rwanda to photograph the distribution days, community health worker visits and how the program is improving the lives of those involved.

Education and ongoing support is central to the project. Every family is visited by a Community Health Worker who explains the dangers of cooking on a traditional fire and household air pollution and the health advantages of cooking on the stove and they also make sure the family know how to use it. Behaviour change is immediate and lasting.

The photography went on to form a major part of DelAgua’s marketing awareness campaign being published in the “Tubeho Neza” book and featuring in a number of magazines. Jonathan Banks went on to be a winner with the photography at the prestigious Sony World Photography Awards.
