The 500th UK & Ireland Nando’s

Architecture, Commercial

Nando’s UK & Ireland has recently opened its 500th restaurant in Leatherhead, Surrey. To commemorate this achievement, the location features a PERi-Red Plaque on the premises and offered complimentary bespoke PERi-PERi sauce bottles to the first 500 customers.

I have photographed with Nando’s for over ten years now, supplying them with restaurant photography and marketing material. I continue to be inspired by the structure of their business, created to make a positive impact wherever they are located.

Since opening in the UK in 1992 [first restaurant location being Ealing, West London], Nando’s has not only been serving its infamously PERi-PERi grilled chicken but also working with over 500 local UK charities and donating 5 million meals to those in need.

Mark Standish, CEO Nando’s UK and Ireland: “Opening our 500th restaurant in the UK and Ireland is a proud moment for Nando’s, and one that belongs to all our people – past and present – who have each played their part in reaching this incredible milestone. When we open a restaurant, it’s not just about great food, it’s about bringing people together and becoming part of the local community.”

The design of Nando’s restaurants has changed over the 500 locations as part of their shifting brand perception. Nando’s has a colourful Southern African heritage that lends itself to vibrant design expression. Rich animated colours, natural materials, striking patterns and intricate textiles are featured in the furniture, lighting, and surfaces of their more recent restaurants. Leatherhead has been designed with a PERi-PERi palette highlighted through ongoing collaborations with South African designers across various elements.

The new restaurant seats 72 and also caters for takeaway plus Click and Collect. The restaurant is teaming up with Amber Foundation, as part of the No Chuckin’ Our Chicken and community hiring programmes.
