Norton Folgate – a new city of London icon

Architecture

The Norton Folgate redevelopment project is made up of six buildings ranging in size from 10,000 to 120,000 sq ft. Four architects have worked together on the project: AHMM, Stanton Williams, Morris + Company and DSDHA, with the aim of making sure the character and variety of the place is captured in the architecture of the new buildings.

I was commissioned to photograph the finished area, capturing the architecture and interior design of several of the buildings. It was important to produce a set of photographs that showcased the overall approach of carefully restoring and preserving the existing Victorian warehouses whilst also delivering new buildings that are sympathetic to their environment and add to the texture of this part of London.

The Nicholls & Clarke site rises from the silhouette of a Victorian warehouse and blends unique historic character with exciting new design. All-electric and Net Zero at completion, it is a statement address.

7,786 sq ft of iconic warehouse-style space extends into 19,052 sq ft of contemporary offices. Wherever you look, there’s a sense of both old and new. A celebration of the site’s 130-year history as a glass warehouse and a clear ambition to power any business forward.

QOB Interiors delivered a Cat B interior scheme of flexible floorplates giving companies the freedom to grow over time. Levels 1, 2 and 3 boast both original warehouse areas and new contemporary workspaces – an eye-catching contrast of old and new. Carefully selected ‘signifier’ furniture items include a bespoke enamelled reception desk, meeting room and conference tables by AJ Wells and custom joinery by Benchmark. Every floor has high-quality tea points and WC’s and there’s an event space with wrap around terrace on the 13th floor. This ‘Panorama Room’ boasts exceptional views and an interior that blends exposed concrete ceilings and timber flooring with specialist lighting and modern bespoke bar cabinetry and furniture pieces.

Allford Hall Monaghan Morris’ design weaves a sensitive redevelopment of the original warehouses’ façades with stunning new architecture to create a new city icon.
