Sensory immersion in design

Sensory immersion involves engaging multiple senses simultaneously to provide a more comprehensive experience. Nando’s is home to the legendary Afro-Portuguese flame-grilled PERi-PERi chicken, where fire meets food and life meets soul! Every restaurant is designed to be unique but at the same time distinctively a Nando’s. One of the earliest UK restaurants was the Clapham, Northcote Road Nando’s which recently underwent a complete refurbishment as designed by Moreno Masey Architecture.
I was commissioned to photograph the uniqueness of the design and layout of the restaurant. I always look to capture what makes a design “special”. Nando’s Northcote Road is not about square footage or maximising table numbers, it has been designed around a Peri-Peri feeling.
Nando’s Southern African heritage is reflected over both restaurant floors, with structural light pendants by Ashanti and bespoke fabrics created by South African designers. Hand-made terracotta tiles also feature, bringing the Portuguese interior to life. Artwork from South African artists is also displayed, as part of Nando’s ongoing partnership with Spier Arts Trust.
